U.S. Space Forces-Northern (SPACEFOR-NORTH) is the United States Space Force (USSF) service component assigned to U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM). Activated on January 30, 2026, at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colo., SPACEFOR-NORTH serves to provide organic space expertise and capabilities to the combatant command.
The establishment of SPACEFOR-NORTH is part of a broader USSF initiative to create Component Field Commands (C-FLDCOMs) for each combatant command. This organizational structure is designed to normalize the presentation of space forces and provide each combatant commander with a subordinate space commander focused on integrating space assets and personnel into joint operations.
The primary responsibilities of SPACEFOR-NORTH include:
- Providing dedicated space support to USNORTHCOM's plans, operations, training, and exercises.
- Serving as the central point for the consolidation of all space activities under a single commander.
- Guiding the development and delivery of space capabilities to enhance joint lethality and effectiveness in the defense of the homeland.
- Coordinating with U.S. Space Command (USSPACECOM) to define future requirements for space capabilities needed to achieve USNORTHCOM's objectives.
