The Mighty Watchful Eye: 15th Space Surveillance Squadron Team Operates and Maintains Upgraded GEODSS System

Military and Civilian team members with Mission Delta 2's 15th Space Surveillance Squadron operate and maintain the GEODSS (Ground-Based Electro-Optical Deep Space Surveillance) system at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, June 15, 2026. GEODSS rapidly searches for, discovers, and tracks small, dim threats in orbit. One of three locations around the globe, the New Mexico facility was the first to receive the Ground-Based Optical Sensor System (GBOSS) upgrade, which doubles the field of view, doubles the search speed and more than triples the sensitivity of what the U.S. Space Force can see on orbit. A second GEODSS facility in Hawaii completed the GBOSS upgrade in April 2026. The U.S. Space Force's scanning of earth's orbits is now done faster, wider, and clearer than ever before in Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), Geostationary Orbit (GEO), High Earth Orbit (HEO) and cislunar orbits. These enhancements demonstrate the Space Force's investments in modern technologies rapidly transitioned to the warfighter to maintain an asymmetric advantage across the continuum of conflict.
