U.S. Space Force validates highly transportable electromagnetic warfare rapid deployment capability

The U.S. Space Force Combat Forces Command has validated the rapid deployment capability for Remote Modular Terminals (RMTs), a highly transportable reversible jamming system added to the family of electromagnetic warfare capabilities developed to support and enable the successful execution of joint force operations.

The U.S. Space Force executed a proof-of-concept for rapid deployment capability recently, demonstrating the ability to pack RMTs in an Internal Slingable Unit (ISU). This adjustment reduces the timeframe required to deploy the system and cuts the required aircraft pallet positions by half. It further augments the system’s environmental protection, reduces maintenance requirements, and increases the system’s reliability to support combatant command objectives.

“These systems are invaluable to space operations as they can be taken anywhere and controlled from all over the globe,” said a field grade officer within Mission Delta 3. “This rapid distribution concept that leverages a lower cost, proliferated architecture has been proven effective in support of joint force operations.”

RMTs allow temporary disruption to satellite links, a critical active defense mechanism able to be employed without generating orbital debris. RMTs can be operated remotely and fielded in large numbers at a low cost. They are also highly portable due to their compact design.

RMTs offer a flexible addition to the recently upgraded Counter Communication Systems 10.2, dubbed Meadowlands, furthering U.S. Space Force reversible counterspace capabilities. This asset protects U.S. allies and partners by enabling the Joint Force to responsibly counter adversary satellite communication capabilities.

“Our electromagnetic warfare capabilities are growing stronger every day, both in the capabilities we employ and the caliber of training and operational experience we’re levying on our Guardians,” said U.S. Space Force Col. Angelo Fernandez, commander of U.S. Space Force Combat Forces Command’s Mission Delta 3 – Space Electromagnetic Warfare. “Our Guardians are dedicated to combating space-enabled attacks and defending the space domain. RMTs further enable our ability to effectively detect, deny, disrupt and degrade adversary capabilities so our joint forces on land, air and sea can execute their mission objectives.”

RMTs are currently in a limited use phase, which allows systems to be operationally employed by combatant commands while still undergoing development and testing. This has been a collective effort amongst the Combat Forces Command’s Mission Delta 3 and Space Rapid Capabilities Office to field RMTs and increase the capacity, adaptability, and resiliency of the system.

“The development and fielding of RMTs is moving quickly, allowing us to adapt and overcome threats,” said Fernandez. “This huge advancement in electromagnetic warfare will supercharge the U.S. active defense system and define the future of military spacepower.”
